It must’ve been a long time since we last had any, because the two youngest (8 and 10) went “huh?” when I announced the after dinner treat. The older ones, on the other hand, had to be fended off during cooking. In Denmark æbleskiver is a Christmas food, but since we don’t celebrate Chistmas we get to eat them anytime we want!
While cooking I remembered why I haven’t cooked these for so long: the non-stick coating got tired of sticking around and the æbleskivepande needs replacing.

DN’s lime green raglan is ready to wear. I am quite pleased with myself; I do NOT like weaving in ends and tend to put it off till “later”, but this time I actually got it done the same day I finished the actual knitting. Another first for me was the way I dealt with the underarm shaping. I did not cast off the stitches, but instead placed them on some spare yarn, and when done with the knitting used kitchener stitch to graft the sleeves and body together. As you can see in the picture, it is not perfect, but as this is my 1st time ever doing kitchener stitch I am quite happy with the result.

Pattern : The Knitter’s Handy Book Of Sweater Patterns by Ann Budd
Yarn: Harmony by Bendigo Woolen Mills
Needles: 3.5 and 3.75 mm
To like or not: I like it a lot. I enjoy knitting raglans and this turned out exactly the way I hoped.

It’s taking me ridiculously long to knit this thing, but the raglan for for 4yr old DN is almost done. As mentioned earlier I’m using Harmony from Bendigo Woolen Mills. It’s made from 30% wool, 69.6% cotton and 0.4% lycra. This yarn has three strands that are fairly loosely twisted together, so it’s quite splitty, and I’ve had to be extra careful about making sure I didn’t inadvertently miss a strand. The lycra gives the yarn and the knitted fabric a slightly uneven texture, which I really like. Apart from the fact that this must be handwashed it’s a nice yarn for children’s wear. Pleasantly soft, and suitable for year round wear which is a plus when they grow out of things so fast.

Yesterday DH and I attended the Seventh Tun Razak Lecture on “The West and Islam: Rethinking Orientalism and Occidentalism” by Professor Dr. Carl W. Ernst. DH was invited as he is OU alumni and got permission for me to tag along. It was very interesting, especially because some of what he said is stuff I have been thinking myself - except I obviously don’t say it as well as he did. But I have often wondered at the whole Islam versus the West thing. It may sound simple enough, but as a Muslim with Western roots I know that it isn’t. Because what exactly is “the West” and what exactly is Islam? Neither is a uniform and unvarying entity.

I have lived more than half of my life outside Denmark, doubt that I will ever live there again, but have no plans to give up my Danish citizenship.
And why not? Because after almost 22 years in Malaysia I have come to realize that no matter how well I have adjusted to and love living here, in my heart I am still Danish. Changing one’s nationality is not only about the challenge of adapting to a new culture. It also has to do with heritage, collective memories and knowledge of one’s roots. And that is why it will never say Malaysia on the front of my passport.

It’s not the design, which I think is both pretty and cleverly thought out. I just wasn’t enjoying knitting it.

Vatkuglehoved, dryppende vandhanetud og frøkvæksstemme. Der håbes på snarlig bedring.
