Snowy is boarding with the vet, and tomorrow we take off on our 450 km drive to Kota Bharu, where we will be celebrating the end of Ramadan with DH’s family.
If you celebrate, please accept my sincerest wishes of a happy and joyous Eid ul Fitr.

De Quervain’s Disease is the fancy way of saying tenosynovitis of the wrist, and it’s the reason I haven’t been knitting much the last couple of weeks. I only have mild symptoms, but previous experience has taught me that if I ignore them it will get much worse.
Anyway, here is my current project. My mother brought the yarn, Laine Fonty’s Ombelle, with her the last time she was here and asked me to make her a shawl. I don’t think this yarn is particularly well-suited for lace, but I know my mother wanted something with holes, so this is what I came up with. Hopefully she’ll like it.

Snowy is a kitten and joined our family on Friday afternoon. DD2 and I found her at the side of the road when we returned from DD2’s monthly appointment with the orthodontist. She was soaked (it had been raining) and looked awful! Skinny with a giant belly, not to mention filthy! She obviously wasn’t quite well, so we took straight to the vet who diagnosed worm infestation and a respiratory infection. Because of the respiratory infection, we haven’t been able to give her a proper bath yet, but just wiping her down made a big difference. The vet estimated that she is about 5 weeks old, and we believe she was probably abandonded. The first day she was here she meowed almost nonstop, but she has already settled in as if this was always her home.

It must’ve been a long time since we last had any, because the two youngest (8 and 10) went “huh?” when I announced the after dinner treat. The older ones, on the other hand, had to be fended off during cooking. In Denmark æbleskiver is a Christmas food, but since we don’t celebrate Chistmas we get to eat them anytime we want!
While cooking I remembered why I haven’t cooked these for so long: the non-stick coating got tired of sticking around and the æbleskivepande needs replacing.

Yesterday DH and I attended the Seventh Tun Razak Lecture on “The West and Islam: Rethinking Orientalism and Occidentalism” by Professor Dr. Carl W. Ernst. DH was invited as he is OU alumni and got permission for me to tag along. It was very interesting, especially because some of what he said is stuff I have been thinking myself - except I obviously don’t say it as well as he did. But I have often wondered at the whole Islam versus the West thing. It may sound simple enough, but as a Muslim with Western roots I know that it isn’t. Because what exactly is “the West” and what exactly is Islam? Neither is a uniform and unvarying entity.
